Hatred on the Rise in America?

Hitler's Germany

In Germany, they came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.  Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.  Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.  Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up! – Pastor Martin Niemoller, 1945

I had been thinking about the massacre at the Orlando club some two weeks ago. Then while researching and writing, somehow I came across the above quote.  It was in a periodical called, “Dialogue” by the Center for the Healing of Racism. Prisoners Coming Home to Roost

pigeon prisoner

There are many in American society who have advanced the argument that it is a matter most vile to spend taxpayer dollars on attempts to educate or rehabilitate offenders.  – Derek Irvin, PhD Candidate

The 1994 crime bill passed by the United States Congress explicitly prohibited inmates from receiving Pell grants by stating:  “No basic grant shall be  awarded…to any individual who is incarcerated in any Federal or State penal institution (Korte, 2016).  Surely people who break laws of a system should be punished.  However, the system should too provide an opportunity to rehabilitate and restore!  Surely the prisoners will eventually come home to roost.

The Elderly Lady and the Flower Basket

Flower Basket

It was earlier last week, when en route to the office, I saw an elderly woman.  She appeared to be in her late 80’s early 90’s.  I see her often. Normally, she is pruning roses and other flowers that skirt the front of her modest home.  She was carrying a basket very similar to the one pictured above.  It appears that she had picked flowers along the edge of her front yard and placed them in this basket – so neatly. She, thin and looking almost anemic, carried the basket like a purse in one hand and a cane in the other.  She placed in turn the cane, then one foot after the other.  Cane, then the left foot, then right foot, cane, then the left foot and then the right foot as she ever so carefully walked up the incline of her driveway.  I thought to myself, that is not much of an incline and a baby could walk that easily.  Then God offered me my lesson.  What the hell are you in such a rush for?!

Sometimes, we just have to slow down, pick, and smell the flowers.   – Period, Case-Closed.

600,000 People Leave Prison

Men Prison

For the more than 600,000 who leave prison (or jail) and re-enter society every year, finding employment can be a severe challenge (Wall Street Journal, 2014).

I came across this startling statistic as I was researching and writing for dissertation today. It was 700,000 about 2 and half years ago when commenced the research. Earlier today, I heard that 5 people were stabbed at a neo-Nazi event in Sacramento, California.  As you recall, two weeks ago there was the mass killing that left close to 50 people dead at an Orlando nightclub. Pray for me!  I am at a place in my life today where I  have a bitter taste for religion.  It seems the message of religion has been lost.  The message of Love.  Or maybe it was never about Love?!  When I was in it, I had my 10 lb. bible and I wore people out with it. So, I guess the question again, was it ever about Love?!  It can’t be, not with 600,000 people leaving jail or prison every year.  Do we need a check-up from the neck up?!! What’s wrong with us?!! – Period, Case-Closed!
